I am fortunate to come from a family of sales people, with stories abound of failures and success. In many ways, it's in the blood ... or at least on the end of the phone whenever I want some fresh advice and insights. My dad, Bob Miller, is quite a character and well known in the Australian media for his cheeky, outrageous outspoken-ness ... he is rarely politically correct, is renowned for being blunt about facts & results and is motivated to shake up the status quo. His sayings and sales mantras have rung in my mind and form the foundation to my own success habits ...
Over the years, I've learnt a lot from listening to his anecdotes. Most of the time realising how it's the SIMPLE DAILY HABITS that make a difference in selling. And funny enough, they have remained the same consistent messages over time:
- sales is all about numbers
- pick up the phone
- stop talking and get on with it
- focus, focus, focus
- expose yourself to the risk of success
- keep it simple - KISS
- [don't listen to the bast*rds - they're committed to failure] - this saying gets me going if I ever have 'doubters' whispering in my ear!
Yes - well - if I can continue to practise those simple sales habits, imagine where I will be in another few years' time.
Sure, he does occassionally get himself into hot water when recklessly challenging the comfort zones of big business. Few people want to be told their strategies suck. Particularly when they've paid 000's to create those strategies in the first place.
Bob's career has been one long series of Marketing Week articles bluntly speaking out against the attitude of complacency that can pervade business and their lack of doing the basics really, really well. As Marketer of the Decade he is in demand worldwide as a speaker for his humorous and experienced insights about the future of selling, innovation, dominating markets and how to lead the pack in any industry.
When I need some soulful inspiration, I pick up the phone for a chat and jump off with a refreshed smile or my thinking challenged. I've often appreciated the experienced insights of my dad, Tristan (lively account manager for a large radio station), my sister Rebecca & her partner Richard (who have started 2 franchise chains and passion4pets) and my brother Christopher (engineer with a wonderfully dry sense of humour and practical advice).
I've learnt that speaking openly and honestly about my business hurdles makes it quicker and easier to jump beyond them.
So, pick yourself a mentor and pick up the phone regularly for advice and inspiration.
Who would you like to call?

let's join our hands together to stop this kind of wrong doings. It may risk lives in the future if we just let them continue.
