We have some 60,000 thoughts a day. 95% are the same ones you had yesterday. Scary thought!
What are you doing to stimulate that internal dialogue? TV, reading, comparing, judging self, repeating conversations in your head ... it seems such a natural process, to repeat the same information and thoughts we had the day before, and the day before that. Our conditioning is powerful in channeling our thinking and behaviour, unless we challenge our conditioning and default processes and consciously choose to 'think differently'. As Einsein said, 'You can't solve a problem at the same level it was created'. So, what thoughts are being repeated more often than they you would like? And what can you do to change it?
Easy peasy lemon squeezy (I always wanted to use that term somewhere!) . It's quite simple to notice where your thinking is getting stuck in an unresourceful loop . Here's a process that you can try anytime to create clarity and a new level of thinking:
- Sit peacefully and identify a specific intention or result you are yet to create. Examples could be a sale you want to close, a task you want to complete, a conversation you have been meaning to have.
Tip: Answers often come more quickly with your eyes closed. Closing your eyes reduced external distracitons, quietens the internal chatter and need to judge and allows your body and mind to relax more easily. You'll notice it's also easier to listen your unconscious mind, higher self, intuition, inner voice of truth and true nature, when your eyes are closed. - Observe what internal messages you are repeating to yourself, that are preventing you from fulfilling that specific intention or result.
- Ask yourself a Higher Question. This is a more empowering question that will trigger a different and often higher level of thinking, such as: What is possible here? What is most important about that? What would a more powerful response or action be right now? What leverage do I have to take the next step? What resources do I have to make this real or move this forward? What different thinking could I need to have, to make this happen?
- Commit to action: What am I willing to do next? When will I do it? When will I know that I've done it?
Put yourself into a higher level of functioning by BEING rather than DOING.
Observe this self-supporting silence for 15 minutes a day, or whenever you sense that a different approach is needed. You might be surprised at how that 5% of 'different thinking' expands over time, as you get into a more conscious habit to think creatively!
